Today numerous news agencies including BBC, websites and blogs have announced that women have won a huge "victory" because the proposed "Family Protection Bill" has been sent back by the Majlis for further discussions.
I don't know about everyone else but I am quite disgusted by the whole thing, which to me is nothing but positive press for IRI.
Polygamy is perfectly legal in Iran, a man can have up to 4 wives and numerous temporary (sighe) wives. The only pre-requisite seems to be that the man needs to get the permission of his first wife first! This new "Family Protection Bill" would take away that pre-requisite and the man would be able to re-marry without the permission of his wife.
I've done some digging into the Iranian family law and temporary marriages and divorce, and (please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this) but a man taking on a second wife without the permission of his first wife gives the first wife a valid ground for divorce. This is law as it stands today, doesn't that mean that the man can re-marry without the permission of his first wife?
What is the big hype? I am not surprised that Regime mouth pieces such as Shirin Ebadi and Hashemi Shahroudi are involved in fighting this so called "Family Protection Bill" and winning a "victory"!!!!
Why doesn't Ms. Ebadi who claims to be a woman's rights activist fight the hard fight, fight against polygamy rather then fighting against such a very insignificant part of it?
If you ask me the only victory here is the one for the Islamic Regime, with all the positive publicity it has received today.
