Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday urged Khaled Meshaal, Hamas political leader, to keep up resistance against Israel and end fighting in the Palestinian territories. "The Palestinian government and Hamas have to stop domestic conflicts in Palestine," state television quoted Ahmadinejad as telling Meshaal during talks in Tehran.
He said the Palestinian government should "use its brave and pious forces to take care of the domestic affairs of Palestine while continuing resistance against the Zionist regime."
Hamas refuses to recognize Israel and Meshaal assured Iranian officials that Hamas' stance was unchanged by last month's deal to form a national unity government with Fatah. "The Hamas position is well known. Hamas before the Mecca accord is the same as Hamas after the Mecca accord," Meshaal said at a news conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.
"And it is preserving the right of the Palestinian people as is stated in the Mecca accord."
